Prostate Surgery

The prostate is a gland located underneath the bladder, in front of the rectum. It plays an important role in the part of the male reproductive system that produces fluids that produce part of semen and contain enzymes which liqify semen. As the age advances the prostate gland enlarges and blocks the urinary passage. Surgery for partial or complete removal of the prostate is called a prostatectomy. The most common causes of prostate surgery are prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The prostate surgery can be done under general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep, or spinal anesthesia, which numbs the lower half of your body. Your doctor will recommend a type of anesthesia based on your situation.

During prostate laser surgery, a urologist inserts a scope through the tip of your penis into the tube that carries urine from your bladder (urethra). The urethra is surrounded by the prostate. A laser is passed through the scope. The laser delivers energy that is used to shrink or to remove the excess tissue that is blocking the urethra and preventing urine flow.

There are different types of prostate laser surgery such as:
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLAP). Due to hemostatic abilities of laser it produces minimal bleeding and it the preferred method for patients with heart disease.

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). The laser is used to remove the enlarged tissue( prostate lobes) that is blocking the urethra. Another instrument, called a morcellator, is then used to chop the prostate tissue into small pieces that are easily removed. This method is known to give the most lasting good results. This technique is considered gold standard in surgery for benign prostate enlargement the world over.
